Product Overview

The first CAT-1™ Dynamic Line Rating System was installed by Virginia Power in 1991. Over 25 years, over 500 CAT-1™ Dynamic Line Rating Systems have been installed in 25 countries in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, making it the leading DLR system in the world.


Use of CAT-1™ Dynamic Line Rating Systems allow utilities and transmission operators to develop and apply line ratings in real time, based on actual weather conditions instead of fixed, conservative assumptions – or simplistic ambient-adjusted ratings. Using specially-designed temperature sensors, load cells, cellular or radio communications, and advanced algorithms, CAT-1™ Dynamic Line Rating Systems provide a powerful tool for maximizing the capabilities of transmission lines and avoiding unnecessary operator interventions for transmission line loading relief. On typical transmission lines, Dynamic Line Ratings provide 15-30% additional capability over 95% of the time.


CAT-1™ Dynamic Line Rating Systems provide accurate real-time rating of transmission lines, by monitoring the mechanical tension of both ruling span sections at a deadend structure. Sags, clearances, and average conductor temperature are all directly related to its measurements. Combined with line ampere data from your EMS/SCADA system or from a Power Donut® Line Monitor, an actual line rating is calculated, using our exclusive IntelliCAT™ for Windows software.


CAT-1™ Dynamic Line Rating Systems systems can also provide accurate detection and advance warnings of ice accumulation, potentially averting damage to the overhead line and catastrophic failure of transmission structures.
